The original panning of the drums, piano, sax and bass was perfect..Billy Cobhams cymbols were shimmering. Now the cymbols are flat sounding and the idea to pan the instruments differently than the original is self indulgent, arrogant and 100% wrong. It is impossible to listen on headphones to small sounding drums panned far right and saxophone panned Sharp left again sounding small. In the car its just as awkward. If the idea was to pan the instruments the way you hear them on stage this is not the way you would a quartet set up. The sax would not be far left but in the middle and the piano would be to the left. Extreme panning of drums on a recording is a no no and no one wants to hear it..This recording has been ruinned. As for Joe Farrell this recording has similar problems..Why would u panned the drums not as far right but far enough and mix one of the songs " Sound Down" with the drums the correct way being heard on both left and right? Both recordings should have been mixed in its intirety like this but sadly wasn't. Both CDs lose their beautiful shimmering highs from the original... In the future CTO recordings need to be handled by people less self indulgent and more knowlegable aboutu Jazz recordings...Both these recordings have been ruined....Let's hope for other classics to be released under production of much better ears...For joes these are ruined !Jazz Musician.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-55477434545512633622011-03-12T11:18:15.144-05:002011-03-12T11:18:15.144-05:00Great interview, and total agreement with the abov...Great interview, and total agreement with the above commentator regarding Seidel being vastly underrated in his role as jazz re-issuer.

Don Sebesky is probably the ONLY person in the world more excited than me that GIANT BOX is coming out! Seidel is a very important person in the music biz today.I ran a small CD store in the '90s and we celebrated Verve's 40th anniversary, due to Seidel's digging and repackaging.I still have the cloth banner we hung over the jazz section all of 1994 and the calender created hangs once again on my wall right now since 2011 has the same date sequence.Like Creed,Richard is trying to put good music in as many ears as possible.Paying the bills means another trip into the vault can happen. So, lots of comps, and maybe a few too many repackagings of "The Girl From Ipanema",but also a boxed history of Verve,a Playboy jazz box, which was better than it should have been, and the CD reproduction of Norman Granz' The Jazz Scene, complete with a spiral bound book and a disc and a half of bonus material. That was just one year.Michael Cuscuna gets lots of kudos, justly, but Richard Seidel has kept many a track to,hopefully, finding a new generation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-14171808948809658972011-02-23T13:37:34.157-05:002011-02-23T13:37:34.157-05:00Wow, its great to see more issues on the way. I just bought the Japanese King Record's release of this YESTERDAY!
Bummer!
What do you guys think about these Masterworks releases being the "best sounding" versions available? I wonder what Mr. Siedel feels about the King Record's issues from 2009 that were produced by Creed Taylor and Rudy Van Gelder personally? JazzWaxx caims the those reissues are far superior in terms of sound quality.
My only real complaint though is the Soft Digipack packaging, these things start show signs of wear as soon as the shrink wrap is removed!Tim Turnernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-9830935389063958402011-02-16T19:28:13.040-05:002011-02-16T19:28:13.040-05:00Great news about the April reissues.
