Thanks for sharing the history behind the Hugh! comp - I was going to buy it and I still will but it's good to hear the "back story"! Seems like it's still only available on import. Don't you just love those big labels and their justifications for things... I have no contacts at Universal but it looks like you do and as one producer to another, I thought I'd reach out & see if you could help me with a reissue project of my own for Universal.
Thanks for your consideration,
Pablo Yglesias aka DJ Bongoheaddjbongoheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18219825924706309298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-24886620715766649082010-10-20T18:01:46.085-04:002010-10-20T18:01:46.085-04:00Hi Doug,

Thanks for sharing the history behind the Hugh! comp - I was going to buy it and I still will but it's good to hear the "back story"! Seems like it's still only available on import. Don't you just love those big labels and their justifications for things...Been looking for remastered Masekela stuff from the late 60s early 70s myself (like "Groove Me") so this comp is a much anticipated step in the right direction. At the recent concert I mentioned above, Hugh & Co did one afrobeat track very beautifully, which was Orlando Julius' "Ashiko" - which I guess there is some controversy around - see here:

http://www.ghanaimage.com/archives/newsInfo.php?id=1243&cat_id=5

Anyway, seems Hugh is now giving his old buddy credit because he made a point of telling the audience that Orlando Julius composed it in '74, and Hugh also explained the lyrics; I know Hugh covered it in '75 on that Casablanca album - but I can't find any old version of it by Julius - he did a version of it recently but there's nothing from the 70s, just Hugh's early version. Anyway, the whole show was amazing, especially "Stimela". After reading his autobiography and all his problems with drugs & drink, I was expecting a rickety old toothless ex-addict but he was STRONG.

Also, on the subject of Universal, I was wondering if you could help me get in touch with them actually, because I have a reissue project I'd like to do with one of their holdings that's not been reissued yet (funk/jazz/spoken word) I have done a bunch of comps before - for Vampisoul, Rough Guide, and Nascente - and write for Wax Poetics - so I have experience with this sort of thing but when faced with the terrifying corporate fortress that is Universal, I must say I gave up. I have tried to talk to them before - about Bo Diddley's 70s funk recordings and for my Latin album cover book ("Cocinando") but gave up because all I got were secretaries and recorded messages. Anyway, I have no contacts at Universal but it looks like you do. As one producer to another, I thought I'd reach out & see if you could help.
Thanks for your consideration,
Pablo aka DJ Bongohead (check out my blog, bongohead.blogspot.com)djbongoheadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18219825924706309298noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-2022446980740312672010-08-17T12:36:01.226-04:002010-08-17T12:36:01.226-04:00Interesting insight into the release, thanks for s...Interesting insight into the release, thanks for sharing.

Agreed with praise for Jazzanova's remix, good use of the original groove.

Disagree with thoughts on Moritz's reinterpretation. The song has also been issued on a few compilations, including a UK CD issued a few years back called STIMELA (Conniesseur Collection). If you could email me at kys@pdx.edu I'd be incredibly grateful! Thank you in advance.kylenoreply@blogger.com
