Henry Mancini planted the seed of this earlier with "Peter Gunn" and "Dreamsville." Needless to say, there was a spike in French horn player employment.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-42885559758566340022012-04-11T02:08:23.761-04:002012-04-11T02:08:23.761-04:00have been searching and SEARCHING for the song tha...have been searching and SEARCHING for the song that rolls for the credits for the movie The Toy with Richard Pryor. Pat always owned the master and licensed it to Capitol. It was also released on CD on Pat's short lived Soundwings label, though I have not seen a Soundwings LP of it.And at least "Bubbles Was a Cheerleader" from "Shades of Today" is available for download on itunes. Good news for me,I found a nice stereo copy of "How Sweet It Is"yesterday for 2 bucks, replacing my mono copy with a chip out of it(courtesy of someone running over it while producing spots at my college radio station.I borrowed lots of Pat's stuff for PSA beds).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-13209353689041053552010-09-27T12:50:56.617-04:002010-09-27T12:50:56.617-04:00Another superb piece of writing Doug.
Pat Williams...Another superb piece of writing Doug.
Pat Williams only came to my notice a few years back when I bought the two "Music Scene" DVD's that were compiled from the TV series on which he was the resident band leader.(a 45 was issued of the theme)
I've got "Think","Heavy Vibrations","Shades of Today","Threshhold" and various 45's so will now be on the lookout for the others you have reviewed.Kirkatronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13427799805758419157noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-55837093215455340262010-09-26T21:51:12.087-04:002010-09-26T21:51:12.087-04:00Thanks, Memo2Self, for the always enlightening com...Thanks, Memo2Self, for the always enlightening comments. I had NO idea that "What Have You Got To Lose" was also a jingle for Diet Rite. GREAT stuff to know. Just FYI - I did not have "Heavy Vibrations" or "Come On And Shine" (aka "Theme") in time for this write up...but I promise they'll appear here soon.Douglas Paynehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16566227636904708488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-88396323091725898932010-09-23T15:30:00.587-04:002010-09-23T15:30:00.587-04:00Oh, and P.S. -- two albums you didn't mention ...Oh, and P.S. -- two albums you didn't mention are his final record for Verve, "Heavy Vibrations" (with a wonderfully rousing cover of "River Deep, Mountain High"), and a REALLY obscure album simply entitled "Theme." (That had, I recall, another version of the "Lou Grant" theme.) Incidentally, "What Have You Got To Lose" on "Think" was written as a jingle for Diet-Rite Cola ("Would you like to lose / An inch / A pinch or a pound or two?"). Again, thanks -- and now I'm gonna go listen to the "Slap Maxwell" theme on Bill Watrous' album!Memo2Selfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15697112440087568681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20115328.post-90116167838243780852010-09-23T00:03:10.630-04:002010-09-23T00:03:10.630-04:00Wow. A tuba? A triangle? A SIREN? Just great stuff. "Threshold" is thrilling to this day, and I cherish the LPs that I hope will be released on CD someday. I think it's a shame that he never had the name-recognition success that, say, Dave Grusin has -- and that he didn't release more albums. Nevertheless, thank you so much for this, Doug -- and now I'm gonna go listen to the "Molly Dodd" theme!Memo2Selfhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15697112440087568681noreply@blogger.com
